Calibration is the process of comparing a measuring instrument against a known standard to ensure its accuracy. Without regular calibration, “measurement drift” can lead to financial loss, safety hazards, or poor product quality.

Storage Tank Calibration (Strapping)

This involves determining the exact volume of large tanks (vertical, horizontal, or underground) at different levels.

  • The Process: Technicians use “strapping” (manual tape measurement) or Optical Laser Scanning to create a 3D model of the tank’s interior.
  • The Output: A Capacity Table (or strapping table) that tells you exactly how many liters or gallons are in the tank for every centimeter of fluid depth.
  • Why it matters: Essential for inventory control and custody transfer in the oil, gas, and chemical industries.

Flow Meters & Gauges

These instruments measure the movement or pressure of liquids and gases.

  • Flow Meters: Calibrated using a “Master Meter” or a “Prover Loop.” A known volume of fluid is passed through both the master and the device being tested to check for discrepancies.
  • Pressure Gauges: Tested using a Dead Weight Tester. Known weights are applied to a piston to create a precise amount of hydraulic pressure, which is then compared to the gauge’s reading.

Weighing Scales & Balances

From laboratory analytical balances to massive truck scales (weighbridges).

  • Standard Weights: Calibration is performed using Certified Reference Weights (Class E2, F1, or M1 depending on the precision required).
  • Testing Points: Technicians check for:
    • Repeatability: Does it give the same result three times in a row?
    • Eccentricity: Does it weigh accurately even if the object is placed on the corner of the platform?
    • Linearity: Is it accurate at both the low end and the high end of its capacity?

Volumetric Glassware & Cylinders

Used in laboratories and industrial mixing to ensure precise liquid ratios.

  • Gravimetric Calibration: This is the most accurate method. The lab weighs the amount of pure water a cylinder holds and then uses the known density of water (adjusted for temperature) to calculate the exact volume.
  • Class A vs. Class B: Calibration verifies if the item meets high-precision “Class A” standards or general-purpose “Class B” limits.

Kitchen & Food Service Items

In commercial food production, calibration ensures consistency and safety.

  • Thermometers: Calibrated using the Ice Point Method (0°C) or Boiling Point Method (100°C) to ensure food is cooked to safe internal temperatures.
  • Portion Scales: Regularly checked with test weights to maintain “Trade Discovery” standards, ensuring customers get exactly the weight they pay for.
  • Measuring Jugs: Verified against a calibrated volumetric standard to ensure recipe consistency across large-scale batches.

Gas Cylinders & Pressure Vessels

Calibration here is often tied to safety inspections.

  • Hydrostatic Testing: The cylinder is filled with water and pressurized beyond its limit to measure “permanent expansion.” If the metal stretches too much and doesn’t snap back, the cylinder is decommissioned.
  • Gas Mixture Verification: For cylinders containing specialty gas blends (like medical oxygen or welding gas), the concentration is verified using Gas Chromatography.
